Two settings change how the AI works on your message: Web Search and Reasoning Effort. Each conversation keeps its own settings. You can use the two settings together. When Web Search is on, the AI does not use only its training data. Before it answers, it searches the internet for current information and uses the results in its answer. The answer includes links to the sources, so that you can check the information.

Open the options

Click the + button in the message box.

Turn on Web Search

Click Web Search so that it shows On. A Web tag shows in the message box.

Ask your question

Send your message. The AI searches the web and uses the results in its answer.
To set web search for all your new chats, use Enable Web Search in Settings > Chat Preferences.
  • News and recent events
  • Current software documentation
  • Current prices, availability or market data
  • Recent changes to rules or laws
  • Current information about competitors
A web search makes the answer slower. Turn Web Search off when you do not need current information.

Reasoning Effort

Some models can think about a problem before they answer. Reasoning Effort sets how much the model thinks. More effort gives a more thorough analysis, but the answer takes more time and uses more tokens.

Open the response settings

Click the + button in the message box, then click Response Settings.

Select a level

Under Reasoning Effort, select a level. The levels depend on the model, for example Off, Low, Med, High, X-High or Max. Some models cannot turn reasoning off. Reasoning Effort shows only for models that can reason.

Read the answer

While the model thinks, the answer shows a Thinking section. When the model is done, the section shows Done. Click the section to see or hide the steps.
To set the effort for all your new chats, use Reasoning Effort in Settings > Chat Preferences. Each model uses the nearest level that it supports.

When to use more effort

  • Complex math or financial calculations
  • Problems with many steps
  • Code errors that need a careful analysis
  • Decisions where the model must compare the advantages and disadvantages
Reasoning uses more tokens, because the model writes its reasoning and then the answer. Your usage includes the reasoning tokens.

Use both settings together

You can turn on Web Search and use a high Reasoning Effort at the same time. The AI then searches the web and thinks carefully about the results before it answers. This is useful when you:
  • Research a subject and build an analysis from current data
  • Check a statement against current sources
  • Make a decision that needs current information and careful logic
The two settings together give the slowest answers and use the most tokens. Use them together only when the depth of the answer is important.
